What happens when a computer owned by your company appears to be right in the middle of a criminal act, a civil wrong or other unauthorized activity? What do you – IT manager, attorney, accountant, business owner – need to do when you suspect such foul play may need to be proven with computer evidence? Be careful – the answer is not obvious!
If you’re thinking “forensics” is something for TV dramas and hardly relevant for you, Monroe County District Attorney Mike Green disagrees. This growing problem is touching all kinds of companies, and he wants you to know how to preserve the evidence that will enable the District Attorney’s Office to prosecute the parties responsible for disrupting your business.
We've got an outstanding panel to teach you the basics of Computer Forensics 101. Jennifer Whitman, Chief of the County Court and Economic Crime Bureaus in the District Attorney’s Office, will describe how her bureau at the DA’s office handles crimes with computer-based evidence. Susan Ippoliti, of Solutions in Litigation, will review the process for responding to a civil incident that involves computer-based evidence, from the first steps in preserving evidence through working with specialists to achieve resolution in court or via settlement. Jerry Grant, Acting Chief, National IT LAN Application & Policy Support Team, United States Courts, will provide an overview of the technical aspects of handling computer-based evidence, including specialized equipment and laboratories and the rigorous procedures executed by forensic experts to preserve the chain-of-custody.
Whether it’s theft of IP; harassment using a company-provided cell phone; or the use of corporate assets to engage in illegal activities like porn, phishing, theft of service, copyright violations and more, the people on the other side are likely to be experts - you can’t afford not to know what to do.
Our panelists provided a number of useful links during their presentations. We encourage you to deepen your understanding of this topic with further research.
