As technology meets healthcare in places like the Center for Future Health (CFH), creative minds are spearheading what’s now been identified as a whole new industry – proactive self-care. This fomenting industry is tough to pin down as rapid advances in technology pair up with swiftly evolving medical paradigms to deliver solutions that increasingly enable people to take ownership for their personal health. Miniaturization enables portable, personal medical devices like wearable insulin pumps. Wireless technology drives emergency notification systems for seniors. Internet connectivity powers remote diagnostics. And that’s only the beginning!

Self-care technology promises to be the missing link in the drive to:

  • Improve quality of life for people with chronic health conditions as well as their caregivers.
  • Promote healthy communities and lifestyles through technologies and systems that provide continuous personal health monitoring and feedback to all individuals.
  • Assure awareness of and access to continuous health data collected in non-clinical settings.

Whether you’re a design engineer, a bio-tech entrepreneur, a healthcare professional or a Rochesterian with an interest in our community’s future, you don’t want to miss this eye opening event.

The Center for Future Health (CFH) was founded to give patients, caregivers, and physicians better care and information through personal health technology. The organization is working towards a proactive health system that leverages technology to support the personal health care needs of all. Cecelia Horwitz, Associate Director of the Center for Future Health, will provide an overview of this new industry. She will explain how healthcare can shift from the traditional patient – physician treatment at a healthcare facility to a model of patient self-care at home, supported by exciting new technologies.

To deliver on the tremendous potential for this sector, Intel has established a new vertical industry group focused on personal health platforms. They are involved in this field with several organizations in our community and we’re pleased to be able to share some of their vision for the future of personal health technology.

Ultralife Batteries’ founders, among the original pioneers of the lithium battery industry, sought to develop and commercialize more advanced lithium battery technologies. We may think of the military and industrial applications for their technology, but impressive work on the creation of a slimline power supply is delivering next generation gains in portable consumer electronics – and in portable medical devices. Ultralife's headquarters and primary manufacturing and R&D facilities are in nearby Newark, NY. Ralph Wise, Commercial Marketing Director, will describe how Ultralife’s unique expertise and products are contributing technologies that help to drive the emerging proactive self-care industry.
